Hamlet chief (standing) offered us wine:
Sometimes on our medical patrols
we would be offered (and we accepted) rice wine.  It was made in two-foot-tall earthen jars
with about two inches of stuff floating around on top.
The “stuff” was fermenting agents and God knows what else.
You poked hollow bamboo straws through the stuff and drank.

It tasted somewhat like muscadine wine but was a good deal stronger.
The Hre loved rice wine and our soldiers filled their canteens with it whenever they could.
